How Much Math Do You Really Need Before Starting Mechanical Engineering?

"I got a B in high school calculus, am I cut out for engineering?" is one of the most common things I hear from people deciding whether to study engineering. The honest answer is that the question is aimed at the wrong subject.
What math will you learn in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering?
As an engineer, you're not expected to fully understand complex mathematics aimed at developing mathematical knowledge further. You're not a maths researcher. Math in engineering is primarily used as a tool to help describe engineering phenomena in a digestible way. The mathematics you will learn follows a similar pipeline by semesters.
- Linear Algebra/ Calculus I: vector spaces, matrices, limits, derivatives, basic integrals
- Calculus II: Taylor series, convergence tests, multivariable calculus
- Calculus III: Ordinary Differential Equations
- Calculus IV: Partial Differential Equations (some universities require this but not all)
The latter topics might seem difficult at first, but you must remember, you're not expected to know any of this before entering university. You will learn it in your calculus classes, and you will use the concepts over and over again in other engineering courses. You will see that dynamics equations are easier because of vector calculus. It's a tool, not an obstacle. You will see that heat conduction equations only make sense when you understand Ordinary Differential Equations. You can be sure your uni only wants you to know the math that actually is helpful to you, so even if during the math course it doesn't make perfect sense because a math PhD overexplained a simple concept, your engineering classes will use it in a simple manner and actually make it logical.
My experience with struggling students
I've seen many students struggling with static mechanics and thermodynamics in my Aerospace teaching journey. I have never seen a student's primary problem be a lack of mathematical capability. Careless mistakes are indeed made more often by those weaker in mathematics, but that is not going to make or break your studies, maybe just cost you a couple points in an exam. People who struggled the most with actual engineering subjects were generally lost due to complex explanations by professors on concepts that can be described more easily. The actual math that engineering subjects need from you can mostly be done on a calculator or provided software. From my experience, for students who can get by in the mandatory mathematics courses, the math in the consequential engineering courses will not be the bottleneck.
My personal love for mathematics
I personally am quite indifferent to mathematics. I tolerate it and appreciate the brilliant minds who invented the complex methods that 250 years later I can barely understand, but I will never prove mathematical rules for fun. I will use the tools invented by others to solve Partial Differential Equations, and focus on the engineering part I actually care about. If you tolerate mathematics, that's all the mathematical passion you need to become a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineer.
A reasonable standard check for yourself
Before entering the degree, can you solve simultaneous equations, can you rearrange simple algebraic equations, can you simplify an expression? After learning the concepts during your first couple of semesters, are you able to do matrix multiplication and inversion, simple differentials and integrals, and know simple ODE solution methods? If mathematics is something that mostly makes sense to you, and you don't dread looking at numbers, give engineering a chance! It's not as hard as you might initially think.
