In static mechanics, equilibrium is required. The general form for Equilibrium is ∑F = 0 and ∑M = 0.

This condition states that all forces and moments balance. This ensures that our system does not tend to move due to an imbalance in forces or moments.

In 2D statics, we need a sum of forces in the X and Y direction and the sum of moments in the Z direction to be zero.

[1] The first element we will encounter in mechanics is a truss. Trusses are elements that can only take loads in the axial direction.
